Diabetes is a condition where the body does not create or correctly use insulin. Insulin is needed to transform sugar, starches, and other food into energy needed for daily living. According to the American Diabetes Association, more than 23 million adults and children in the United States suffer from diabetes. What causes diabetes is not immediately known. However, hereditary and environmental considerations, including diet and lack of physical activity, can play a part. There are several types of diabetes: type 1, type 2, gestational, and prediabetes.

    Type 1 Diabetes

Type 1 diabetes is most prevalent in children and young adults. Most type 1 diabetes occurs before the age of 14. Type 1 diabetes arises because of an autoimmune disorder, as the body’s immune system is not functioning properly. With type 1 diabetes, the body believes that insulin is bad for it and creates antibodies to ward off “enemy” tissue, eliminating cells that create insulin. This shortage of insulin causes diabetes. In rarer instances, type 1 diabetes can also be caused by an injury to the pancreas or the removal of the pancreas.

    Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is a condition that affects the way the human body deals with digested food for growth and strength. Type 2 diabetes is often connected to growing older, being overweight, eating poorly, and having high levels of bad cholesterol. Type 2 diabetes is caused because people have two difficulties with their insulin: Their muscle, liver, and fat cells do not use insulin properly, and the pancreas, a gland in the stomach, reduces its creation of insulin. These issues with insulin cause glucose to increase in the blood, pour into the urine, and pass out of the body so the body does not receive its main source of nourishment.

    Gestational Diabetes

Some females get gestational diabetes near the end of pregnancy. Most times, this type of diabetes disappears once the baby is born. However, someone who develops gestational diabetes will be more at risk for getting type 2 diabetes down the road. Gestational diabetes is caused by hormones during pregnancy that block the effect of insulin or the female body’s not being able to produce enough insulin because of weight gain.

    Prediabetes

Prediabetes is a condition where someone’s blood sugar level is considered high, but not high enough to be considered as having diabetes. Most people who have prediabetes do not know they have it or are in danger of developing diabetes. Prediabetes arises when the body does not respond normally to insulin and cannot keep blood glucose levels within normal range. When cells in the body cannot use glucose, the sugar then stays in the blood. Prediabetes is caused by this increase of sugar in the blood.

Diabetes mellitus is a nutritional disorder, characterized by an abnormally high level of blood glucose and the excretion of the excess glucose in the urine. It results from an absolute or relative lack of insulin which leads to abnormalities in carbohydrate metabolism and metabolism of protein and fat. The word diabetes is derived from the Greek word meaning “to siphon, to pass through”, and mellitus comes from the Latin word “honey”. The cases of diabetes are much higher these days as compare to the past. The most commonly used screening tests are the determination of the fasting blood glucose level and the blood glucose level tested two hours after a meal. The normal fasting blood sugar content is 80 -120mg. per 100 ml of blood, this can go up to a level of 160 mg. per 100 ml of blood two hours after meals. Anything above these levels can be termed as diabetic levels. It occurs in all age groups but the most common sufferers are obese people in middle or older age.

    Type 1 diabetes

Type 1 Diabetes is autoimmune disease that affects 0.3% on average. It is result of destruction of beta cells due to aggressive nature of cells present in the body. Researchers believe that some of the Etiology and Risk factors which may trigger type 1 diabetes may be genetic, poor diet (malnutrition) and environment (virus affecting pancreas). Secondly, in most of the cases, diabetes occurs because there is abnormal secretion of some hormones in blood which act as antagonists to insulin.

    Type 2 diabetes

Type 2 Diabetes is also called non insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) or adult-onset diabetes. It occurs when the body produces enough insulin but cannot utilize it effectively. This type of diabetes usually develops in middle age. A general observation says that about 90-95 % of people suffering with diabetes are type 2; about 80 percent are overweight. It is more common among people who are older; obese; have a family history of diabetes; have had gestational diabetes. There are number of risk factors found to be responsible for type 2 diabetes like, the more the Etiology and Risk factors carried by an individual, the higher the risk for developing diabetes.

    Causes of Diabetes

    1.    Poor Diet (Malnutrition Related Diabetes) : Improper nutrition, low protein and fiber intake, high intake of refined products are the expected reasons for developing diabetes.

    2.    Obesity and Fat Distribution : Being overweight means increased insulin resistance, that is if body fat is more than 30%, BMI 25+, waist grith 35 inches in women or 40 inches in males.

    3.    Sedentary Lifestyle : People with sedentary lifestyle are more prone to diabetes, when compared to those who exercise thrice a week, are at low risk of falling prey to diabetes.

    Diet Plan for Diabetes

Eating right for diabetes comes down to three things:

    1.    What you eat. Your diet makes a huge difference!! You should eat mostly plant foods, cut back on refined carbs and sugary drinks, and choose healthy fats over unhealthy fats.

    2.    When you eat. Diet is part of it, but keeping regular meal and snack times also affects your blood sugar levels and will help to keep them more constant.

    3.    How much you eat. Portion sizes matter. Even if you eat very healthy meals, if you eat too much you will gain weight, which is a factor in diabetes.

    Treatment for Diabetes

As symptoms of diabetes tend to show up much later than the condition occurs in your body, it is advisable to have your blood sugar levels diagnosed periodically.

Even if there are natural remedies that have been developed for the treatment for diabetes, insulin injections and implantable insulin pumps are the most sought out ones. Type 1 diabetes can be treated with exercise, insulin and a balanced diet. Type 2 diabetes is first treated with weight reduction, a diabetic diet and exercise. Weight reduction and exercising increases the body’s sensitivity to insulin, thus controlling blood sugar elevations.

When these methods fail to lower the blood sugar levels, oral medications are used. If oral diabetes medications are insufficient and do not help lower the glucose levels in blood, insulin treatment is used.

Type 2 diabetes is a situation that’s often brought on by a poor diet. Frequently we are as well busy or as well lazy to prepare correct meals so we snack on meals which are bad for us or order take aways. Of course these aren’t usually a poor thing but if enjoyed frequently can have a detrimental affect on our well being. Most of us know this currently but it is implementing this into our routine that we struggle with.

This kind of diabetes is generally developed in those of us that are obese and unhealthy. It is really a situation that can be controlled by either diet, tablets or insulin injections. The first port of call when you are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes would be to look at your diet and methods that this can be improved. It isn’t unknown for some 1 diagnosed with type 2 diabetes to have the situation completely reversed once they have lost weight and changed their eating habits.

It’s easy to use the excuse that we’re as well busy to cook as a reason to eat badly. After all our local Chinese, Indian, fish and chips or pizza parlor is generally only a phone call away. Nevertheless these should be treated as a treat and not a cause to avoid cooking. These foods are often full of additives, sugars and salt which are poor for any diet. On going, lengthy term consuming of these types of food are 1 of the elements to developing this condition.

No one is saying that you shouldn’t appreciate these meals and foods like it in moderation. Nevertheless that is exactly what they should be and not every day occurrences.

We all know that having a diet plan like this will make us over fat, being more than weight causes all kinds of health issues including diabetes.

If you’re either of your parents have type 2 diabetes then there’s a 1in3 chance that you’ll develop this also. This is partly because the condition could be hereditary and partly simply because you pick up your eating habits from your mother and father. If they’re obese then the chances are you will probably be too.

This is why you should be implementing healthy eating ways as soon as feasible. Just by adding as a lot fruit and vegetables to your diet plan and cutting down the quantity of sugar and salt you intake you are able to make a huge difference. Try and share cooking duties so that you are all involved in planning and making meals. Have competitions to see who can cook the nicest, healthiest meal. Snacking on fruit via out the day or adding to breakfast cereals and desserts is also a fantastic method to introduce fruit for your daily diet with you barely noticing.

If you’re at risk of Type 2 diabetes you should make these changes as quickly as possible to give yourself the best likelihood of avoiding contracting this situation.
