Michael Murphy from Quinton, Birmingham manages to safely have the occasional spontaneous pint despite having type 2 diabetes. People with diabetes need to take extra care with drinking alcohol, especially on an empty stomach, because it can be dangerous both in the short and the long term. In the short term it can lower blood sugar levels, which for somebody with diabetes can lead to symptoms of hypoglycaemia, including dizziness, drowsiness, confusion and loss of consciousness. In the long term it can worsen control of blood sugar and blood pressure. Drinking with a meal is safer because the food slows down the absorption of the alcohol so the glucose levels are steadier and easier to control. Michael deals with this by carrying supplies of fruit and nut around with him. That way, if his colleagues invite him for a spontaneous drink after work, he can join them.
